Dear all,
I recently attended a wedding and very intrigued by the title, picked up a church magazine that happened to have a theme issue on Christianity and Homosexuality.
One of the things at appealed to me the most, was the notion of needing to transfer "old" religious scriptures into todays context. One of the main arguments the author used (he happened to be a religion scientist) was, that slavery is an accepted concept in the Bible; this is part of the reasons it seems to have been in place for so long.
History however has shown, that slavery has been abandoned as a social construct ever since the international community (technically) agreed that all men are equal and systems like the human right charter or the declaration of the rights of the child have been instated.
So why can people agree to "modernise" this social construct and not do the same for many other current issues such as sexual orientation, pre-marrital sex or something "more simple" such as food regulations?
Believers that read their scriptures carefully should be able to admit that the proposed setting happened in a different time, in a different place and under different general conditions. Shouldn't it be possible to disect the underlying moral and rules of conduct for a good life from the histrorical and (may I say it) potentially partially fictional setting that is for example the Bible?
Freddy
